William Faulkner said that “ We must be free not because we claim freedom, but because we practice it. ” and in this moment of post-exam high before the doubt, the stress and the paranoia creeps in, might I say that I will be indeed practising Liberté, in the spirit of Art from the heart of the Revolution and Napoleonic wars…
There have been several things that have been fluttering restlessly in the back of mind, some interesting but some which just need to be said. Including some of the progress I made on my 21 things to do before I turn 21 list, an encounter with a rampant elephant, and a rather amusing anecdote about a group of monks and the Colombo airport car Lottery.
Stories for another day, as I go off to celebrate the end of exams with a nice, long winded nap
Until then a couple my favourite quotations in the the form of something to think about- from my new favourite book Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts:
“The past reflects eternally between two mirrors -the bright mirror of words and deeds, and the dark one, full of things we didn’t do or say…”
and
“In this way justice is done…because justice is a judgement that is both fair and forgiving…justice is not only the way we punish those who do wrong. It is also the was we try to save them.”
My favorite Faulkner quote is from his Nobel acceptance speech, when he said that mankind won’t just survive, we will PREVAIL. Sends chills down my back every time I read it.
Interesting post, thanks…
That is a great quote! Thanks
